8 Top Golf Courses in Tennessee

With its rolling green hills and traditional culture, it’s no surprise Tennessee is home to over three hundred golf courses. Ranging from enormous private communities to more intimate local clubs, we’ve selected some of the best the state has to offer.

Troubadour Golf and Field Club

Self-described as “exclusive yet intimate,” Troubadour Golf and Field Club is a luxurious private community less than 25 miles from Downtown Franklin, Tennessee. With an impressive 18 hole Tom Fazio-designed champion golf course as its defining feature, this establishment has a wealth of other amenities to offer a premier country lifestyle.

Members get to choose from over three hundred individual, family-style residences, from intimate country cottages to more spacious, modern homes. With their luxurious walk-in closets, game rooms, and pools, these homes come complete with spectacular views of the magnificent Tennessee countryside.

Residents never run out of things to do. The range of outdoor activities is huge, from equestrian excursions to pickleball. To relax and rejuvenate, Troubadour features a state-of-the-art wellness center with personalized fitness classes and dedicated physical therapists for specialized treatment. In the evenings, have dinner at one of their many organic restaurants and enjoy live music at their outdoor music venue.

Troubadour is a true gem among Tennessee’s golf courses.

The Grove

Considered one of the best private golf courses in the Nashville area, The Grove boasts an 18-hole, par-72 course designed by Greg Norman. Consistently maintained in tournament condition, this private community’s 1,100-acre golf course has delighted members for years.

Perched on a hill overlooking the course is The Manor, a stately building and a highlight of The Grove. The central rendezvous for members and guests, the mansion features a fine dining restaurant with seasonal fare and an elegant bar and lounge. Members also enjoy the professionally-staffed fitness center and spa, all while enjoying the private community’s sweeping views.

The Grove takes care to cater to members with families with a variety of other casual restaurants and a resort-style pool complete with a water slide. The nearby general store sells a large selection of convenience items and luxury products, with a focus on eco-friendly, handmade, and small-business goods. Life at The Grove is relaxed and elegant, offering resort-style refinement for members of any age.

The Governors Club

An Arnold Palmer is more than just a refreshing drink at The Governors Club—the legend himself designed and oversaw the construction of the club’s award-winning golf course. From the layout to the particulars of each hole, Palmer’s contribution to this establishment is only one of many assets that sets The Governors Club apart.

This private club’s history dates back to 1799, when Colonel John Winstead founded a farm that remained in his family for generations. One of his descendants erected a stately pillared home, which has been preserved and repurposed by the club as Pleasant Hill Mansion. Once placed on the National Historic Registry of Historic Landmarks, this building contributes an elegant, historical atmosphere few other clubs can offer.

Residents enjoy the luxury and flexibility of sophisticated custom homes spread throughout this private community. For fine dining, The Palmer Room serves an array of gourmet appetizers and entrées, while the nearby clubhouse and pool offer a full day of relaxed fun for the whole family. At The Governors Club, life is luxurious and steeped in the grace of Tennessee.

Belle Meade Country Club

Once ranked among Golf Digest’s top golf courses in Tennessee, Belle Meade Country Club regularly impresses players on its Donald Ross-designed course, which features four sets of tees to accommodate all levels of golfers. It was recently remodeled to highlight the property’s natural beauty, with several stone bridges arching over creeks and shady trees hanging over small lakes.

Located less than a 25-minute drive from central Nashville, Belle Meade is also known for its social atmosphere. The facility is a full-service country club with a pool, tennis courts, and a restaurant lounge complete with impeccable service. Despite its smaller scale, Belle Meade offers an incredible experience and is a highlight of the Nashville area.

Brentwood Country Club

With its storied past, Brentwood Country Club is more than just an exclusive community. The site of several Civil War battles, the club’s central feature is the Midway Mansion, which was constructed in 1847. Several 19th-century archeological artifacts have been found in the building and the surrounding grounds. Members and guests have the privilege of playing rounds in a location woven into the history of America.

Tucked in the rolling hills between Franklin and Nashville, this top-rated 18-hole golf course includes amenities such as a full practice facility, a fitness center, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool with a full-service cabana. The Brentwood Country Club also cultivates a lively social life, with junior tournaments and other social events for the entire family. As members line up their shots and socialize in the shadows of some of the oldest oak trees east of the Mississippi River, this club remains one of the most impressive golfing experiences in the state.

Hillwood Country Club

With its 18-hole, par-72 golf course originally designed by Dan Wilson in 1957, Hillwood Country Club holds its own in the competitive Nashville country club scene. The course is maintained in flawless condition, offering a variety of programs and tournaments for all ages. Hillwood Country Club is also known for its private tennis program, which is the largest in the South. With two-time SEC tennis champion Charles Batt overseeing the program, Hillwood Country Club is one of the best places to develop and sharpen your tennis skills. A full-service tennis shop and five full-time USOTA professionals conducting camps throughout the year guarantee an outstanding experience. In addition to its pro fitness centers and swimming pools, the club has a variety of dining options that are perfect for various occasions. The adults-only Terrance Grill is excellent for formal dinners, while The Hickory Grill is ideal for a relaxed family night out. The Jackson Room taps into Tennessee’s traditional culture with a men’s only restaurant and lounge. Executive Chef Mark Wakefield curates all menus.

Richland Country Club

While most clubs require a journey to be reached, Richland Country Club offers an oasis of peace and elegance in the heart of Nashville. This members-only club has been defined by excellent service and breathtaking views since it opened in 1901. This private community caters to both novice and experienced golf players on its Jack Nicklaus- designed, signature 18-hole, par-72 golf course. With its newly-renovated fitness center and resort-style pool, members and guests have much to enjoy here. The dining at Richland Country Club is more relaxed and informal than its counterparts. The Nicklaus Room has sweeping views of the course, while the adults-only Waxo Grill is perfect for the middle of a game day with its quick, casual lunches. Outside, The Pool Grille is outfitted with an enormous indoor and outdoor section and an extensive menu, bringing the standard of poolside cabanas to the next level.

The Golf Club of Tennessee

With its focus on a high-quality golfing experience, The Golf Club of Tennessee lives up to its name. Its Tom Fazio-designed course placed as the runner-up for the Best New Private Course in America by Golf Digest when it opened in 1991. Panelists described the course as “typical of Fazio: beautiful, playable, and offering numerous risk-reward options without being overwhelming.” The club’s antebellum-style two-story clubhouse complements the beautiful green lawns and natural scenery. Its batten construction with native stone and board give it a distinctive country look, featuring two spacious porches on each level overlooking the course. Inside, amenities for day players include a full-service golf shop and two dining areas.  Members and guests staying overnight have the privilege of lodging in one of the four luxurious guest suites in the clubhouse or one of the nearby Ingram Cabins. Its small number of residential options keep the atmosphere intimate and luxurious.
